Building with Cob
Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce
2006 p/b

The authors undertook an apprenticeship in natural building in the USA. On their return to the UK they started their company "Cob in Cornwall". Since then they have built and restored many cob buildings. The ancient practice has been used throughout Britain for centuries, with 45,000 of the Cornish housing stock made of cob.
This book gives you a wonderful inspiring vision, and at the same time, it is a practical guide to one of the oldest and most versatile of building materials.
It takes a look at earth buildings around the world before the step-by-step chapters on how to build your own. From site and design, planning permission and building regulations, how to mix cob, the foundations, building with cob, roofs, insulation, natural finishes, floors and fireplaces and earth ovens. There are also chapters on restoring and repairing old cob structures, and a comprehensive list of resources and suppliers.
The photographs are really inspirational and the drawings really clear. Just at the first glance of this book you can tell the love their work and life.
As Keith Hall, Editor of Building for Future magazine states "This had got to be the most practical and beautifully illustrated book on earth ever published!"

Natural Building
Tom Woolley
2006 h/b

As an introduction to this book a sentence such as - "it is packed with information and is essential reading for all those who are interested in building with natural, environmentally friendly materials" - is all absolutely true but it is much more than that.
Tom Woolley, Professor of Architecture at Queen's University, Belfast has for many years campaigned for more sustainable practises in the construction industry. Transport, pollution, carbon emissions and fossil fuels are all minimised with the use of natural building materials, and at the same time, the end product becomes more healthy and environmentally beneficial.
Each chapter looks at the various options of natural building materials - earth buildings, timber buildings, green and natural roofs, lime and masonry, paints and finishes, to name a few. It gives really excellent descriptions of the many materials, why they are chosen (also explaining their advantages and disadvantages), details all the main forms of constructions, examines the techniques involved and analysis the principles of green building and the issues involved in planning and regulatory approvals.
It is beautifully illustrated throughout with over 220 colour photographs and diagrams. I don't have to write that because there are photographs of our Green Shop in it - it is because it is true!
My only criticism is that the book was printed in Malaysia. But then there must be a good reason why - which I must investigate.

Building with Hemp
2005 p/b
Steve Allin

These are the opening sentences in the introduction to this book by Steve Allin
"In this book I will describe how to use materials derived from the hemp plant, however I must get certain things clear from the outset. You cannot smoke the house or see the joints in the wall" - Wonderful!
This is a super book and all you will need to know about building with hemp. The author takes us through the subject step by step, beginning with the hemp plant, its history, agriculture and processing, how the of mixing the hemp-wood with lime was conceived and how it was developed into the material now known as hempcrete. The insulation and heat storing qualities of this material is the answer to some requirements for making a healthier way to construct and live in such a home.

Everything is covered in this book. From design, renovating, hemp plaster, finishes, hemp fibre & other materials right through to "how to" This part of the book covers all there is to know about building such a house right down to the electricity, plumbing do's and don't's.

It includes 295 colour photographs (which are bright, cheerful and inspirational) plus many illustrations and diagrams.

The Woodland House
Ben Law
2005
Ben Law's first book 'The Woodland Way' is a permaculture approach to sustainable woodland management, and how he lived and practised this in his own wood. This new book is about how his dream came true to build one of the most sustainable homes in Britain right in his own wood. The house was featured in Channel 4's Grand Designs programme.
The timber frame was chestnut, sourced from his own woodland, together with local straw bales for infill and then plastered from his own clay and local lime, all other materials were also sourced as locally as possible. The whole structure was built for under £28,000, with the help of volunteers, with no crane, no waste, no skip and no electricity from the National Grid. His electricity comes from wind and sun, heat from wood and solar hot water panels, water from a spring and his greywater is purified by a reed bed system.
The evolving design of the house, together with plans and charts are all explained in this beautifully photographed book. Ben Law is an innovative woodsman who created this wonderful home as one of the most sustainable buildings in the UK.

Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls
Nigel Dunnnett and Noel Kingsbury

New Revised Edition
2008

The environmental benefits of planting on roofs and walls are now becoming widely understood, including their value in reducing pollution, insulating against heat and cold and reducing the maintenance of buildings. With climate and environmental concerns increasingly in the public eye this book will inspire architects, builders, gardeners and home maintenance enthusiasts to incorporate green roofs and walls in any forthcoming projects.
It describes the historical development of both commercial and small domestic examples from all over the world. It also provides an introduction to the practical techniques required for constructing green roofs, explaining the weight -bearing considerations, materials, substrates, draining layers, modular systems, and plants (including plant choice, which are suitable for extreme conditions encountered on roofs: drought, high light intensity and wind).
Other chapters explain the ins and outs of how planting on walls requires completely different techniques.
Loads of clear inspirational colour photographs and drawings, and an excellent plant directory.

Cordwood Building
Rob Roy
2003

Cordwood masonry is an ancient technique where walls are constructed of short logs. "Log ends" are laid transversely in the wall (the same way as firewood is stacked).

There are examples (with photographs) of cordwood buildings from all over the world, including Wales, Chile and Sweden. This well illustrated book will inspire designers and help owner-builders decide whether cordwood masonry is appropriate for their building plans. Within the examples shown it explains the variety of ways of building with this product, from using paper-enhanced mortar, cob or stone. Beautiful houses can be built to virtually any shape and some can have bottles incorporated to let in natural light (there are some lovely photos to show examples of this).
An interesting inspirational book.
