The Transition Handbook
The Transition Handbook p/b
From oil dependency to local resilience
Rob Hopkins
2008
22.5 x 22.5cm
This is a must read.
We live in an oil-dependent world and we have reached dependency on this in a very short space of time. We all know it but seem to avoid thinking about what happens when it does run out - or it will become too expensive except for the chosen few.
Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Network, has written this important book. In it he shows how the inevitable challenge ahead of both peak oil and climate change can have a positive effect. The rebirth of local communities, which can grow more than enough of their own food, generate their own power, and build their own houses using local materials. Maybe all cannot be achieved immediately but starting off can unleash a local 'skilling-up' so that people can take back more control of their own lives.
The contents of main part of the book:
The Head: Why peak oil and climate change mean that small is inevitable
The Heart: Why having a positive vision is crucial
The Hands: Exploring the transition model for inspiring local resilience-building
There are now over 30 Transition Towns in the UK, (and many more starting all over the world) with more joining all the time. With little proactivity at government level, communities are taking matters into their own hands and acting locally. If your town/village/area is not into being a Transition Town, this wonderful guide offers you the information to start the process. What a great way to meet people in your community from all walks of life who can offer and share their knowledge, and at the same time start to develop a positive vision for a more self-reliant existence.

Fighting the Banana Wars p/b
And Other Fairtrade Battles
Harriet Lamb
2008
21.5 x 13.5cm
It is only 14 years ago that Fairtrade products were not available in the UK. Today it is worth over £300m and ranging from drinks, food, cotton, flowers to even footballs. At the heart of this revolution is the Fairtrade Foundation. It started off small with hope and big ideas, and now it has grown into changing how corporations deal with their suppliers and how consumers shop. The outcome of this is that it has transformed the lives of over 7million farmers, workers and their families.
Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation explains the fascinating story of how this came about. The Fairtrade Foundation is all about creating a better deal for workers and farmers in the developing world and not rob people in other countries of the means to feed or clothe themselves. From South America to India and Africa she meets the producers and explores the journey quite often through an unjust system. At the same time uncovers the shocking cost of our demand for cheaper food.
As Lamb states "there is much still to be done". This is a compelling eye-witness account from someone at the heart of the campaign.

Great Bow Yard: Anatomy of an Eco Build
Nigel Grifftihs
2007 p/b
Great Bow Yard is an unusual development of 12 homes in Somerset. The developers set out to build to the highest environmental standards, and the result is a successful and award-winning housing scheme.
This book, written by Nigel Griffiths (author of another good book - The Eco House Manual), was the perfect manager for this development. He spells out in a frank and comprehensive way, an account of the building, which is intended in turn, to share lessons with builders, developers, local authorities, planners and anyone else who is involved at any stage in the building process. Great Bow Yard has proved that an environmentally sustainable development is not only theoretically possible but also practically achievable. The homes look normal, beautiful, are well thought out and are reasonable priced.

Carbon Detox
George Marshall
2007 p/b
I am sure you are getting a little fed up with the words "carbon footprint", and as George Marshall starts off in this book 'Oh, not another b .y polar bear! I have to make a confession when I hear people talk about climate change I often find myself alternating between despair and boredom'.
In his frustration of reading so much about this topic but at the same time leaving him feeling cold about the importance of it all, he decided to write his own book.
At first I dipped into it (as I often do when doing book reviews) but then I wanted to read more, so I started at the beginning and read it through. A lot of what Marshall has written, I am sure many of you already know, but it is the way he has put the subject across that makes it so interesting. A really serious topic has been turned it into a really easy to read book in a very casual straight talking and worthwhile way.
So
: Deal with your inner sceptic
: Carbon audit your lifestyle
: Create a low carb action plan that works for you
: Quit the carbon habit once and for all
Buy this book (priced very reasonably) and read how it doesn't have to be doom and gloom to make a new way of life for you and your family.

The Apple Source Book
Sue Clifford and Angel King
with Philippa Davenport
2007 H/B
Almost 3,000 varieties of apples are grown in these islands (cooking, eating and cider). Each has its own distinctive flavour, uses, places of origin, stories and associated customs.
Sue Clifford and Angela King from Common Ground (our favourite charity), with the help of the food writer Philippa Davenport asked chefs, cooks, food writers and nature writers to offer recipes using named apples. Among the contributors are Raymond Blanc, Joanna Blythman, Linda Brown, Rose Elliot, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Sophie Grigson, Richard Mabey, Nigel Slater and Delia Smith.
The delicious recipes are only a part of this book. If you want to know anymore about anything to do with apples it is in this book. A wealth of useful information, including apple indentification, orchards, wildlife, specialist nurseries, blossom routes, Community Orchards, ideas for Apple Day (created by Common Ground), wassailing, plus a whole section of county by county gazetteer of where varieties originated.
A wonderful book, written with a combination of style and innovation by the pioneers of Common Ground.

Diary of Reluctant Green
Richard Hallows
2007 p/b
Richard Hallow admits he was not a natural 'green' and as he says - can you save the planet and still have a life. He approached the topic and was very unconvinced he could sustain the motivation to go green. After all this book is dedicated 'to anyone who's ever washed up a yoghurt pot before realising the local authority won't recycle it anyway'.
From these sort of comments Hallows approaches the important subject in a funny, cynical way. It is much more readable than a book which has a straight and a matter of fact approach. He starts by explaining the first 30 days of his 'green living' and then follows on with the next 11 months, concluding at the end - did it do any good?
Really useful information throughout eg information on all the different types of plastic in packaging. Look on the bottom of any plastic bottle and within a triangular logo there will be a number inside, which indicates the type of plastic it is made of. This book indicates the "goodies" and "baddies" within the plastic world. The whole book is packed with information.
A great book.

Tescopoly
Andrew Simms
2007 p/b
The rise of supermarkets, including Tescos, is big news. Do most people really understand how and what it does mean to our daily lives?
Andrew Simms, the person who introduced the term 'Clone Towns' looks into this subject which none of us should ignore.
Simms traces the supermarket disease back to its American roots and charts the moment when the promise of choice turned into something different. With Tesco leading the way he shows how supermarkets are draining life from our town centres, and in do so many smaller shops are closing.
BUT there is a change afoot, the consumer tide is turning and international campaigns are gaining ground. He ends with suggestions of change and the rethinking of big business. We must safeguard our communities and the environment - all over the world.
Read this book and see what you think of supermarkets afterwards.

Eco Deco
Stewart and Sally Walton p/b
2007
There are quite a few books available on "craft designs" with items that can be made from recycled materials but this one is the best I have seen.
There is so much every day junk and waste we have to dispose of so why not have a go at making some useful and beautiful objects from the rubbish? Cardboard, wood, glass, ceramics, metals and fabrics can be turned into furniture, pieces of art, soft furnishings and decorations.
Each chapter explains how to harvest your materials and prepare them for reuse, together with clear instructions.
Recycling materials is not a new phenomenon but this book shows what lovely objects can be made from a few bits of waste.
Beautiful photographs throughout and it also features a gallery of examples from contemporary craftspeople working from recycled materials.

How Many Light Bulbs does it take to Change the Planet?
Tony Juniper p/b 2007
Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth, has spelt out a concise but comprehensive overview of the action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He proposes in a very clear way the many changes that should happen in the areas of climate, production, economic policy, travel, food, international relations and justice, to name but a few. It is not a depressing read at all, he puts the facts on the line, as to how urgent the action is to stop the threat of what climate change is doing to our planet.
He writes 'Because environmental challenges are complex and interlinked, so are also the solutions. That is why I don't expect for a moment that my collection of ninety-five will stand as the last word. What I do hope, however, is that my proposals will stimulate debate, challenging those who disagree to come forward with alternative proposals'. He has sought to draw on his experience rather than the vast array of academic and technical publications that are around.
If only people running the Government departments, big business players would read this book.
The only personal criticism I have, is the unfortunate title. To me it is a little misleading, as it is not another book on the hundreds of ways we can personally save the planet by changing over to low energy light bulbs for instance (important as that is). It is a much wider spectrum than that, although the explanation on how personal lobbying is extremely important.
Definitely a must have book.

We all must realise that climate change isn't someone else's problem, we all should play our part in tackling this - all of us should go on a carbon diet.
Chris Goodall has thoroughly researched in how we can help, not through any high powered initiatives, but by ordinary individual actions in our daily lives. In reading this book it clearly informs us that a low-carbon lifestyle is not only achievable but rewarding, and at the same time can save us all a lot of money - as well as the planet.
At first glance the contents may appear to be a bit daunting, but the graphs, figures and tables are easy to understand, as is the text.
With such chapters as 'The Extraordinary Cheapness of Fossil Fuels, the Scope for Government Action, the Inadequacy of Alternative Means of Reducing Emissions, How our Lives Generate Emissions and What We Can Do about it, Heating, Lighting, Household Appliances, Travel, Food and Other Indirect Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions' we should all be able to do something
for our planet.

Building with Cob
Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce
2006 p/b
The authors undertook an apprenticeship in natural building in the USA. On their return to the UK they started their company "Cob in Cornwall". Since then they have built and restored many cob buildings. The ancient practice has been used throughout Britain for centuries, with 45,000 of the Cornish housing stock made of cob.
This book gives you a wonderful inspiring vision, and at the same time, it is a practical guide to one of the oldest and most versatile of building materials.
It takes a look at earth buildings around the world before the step-by-step chapters on how to build your own. From site and design, planning permission and building regulations, how to mix cob, the foundations, building with cob, roofs, insulation, natural finishes, floors and fireplaces and earth ovens. There are also chapters on restoring and repairing old cob structures, and a comprehensive list of resources and suppliers.
The photographs are really inspirational and the drawings really clear. Just at the first glance of this book you can tell the love their work and life.
