Divine - Heavenly Chocolate Recipes
Linda Collister h/b
2007

For those who love chocolate, and the thought of conjuring up endless chocolate delights in the kitchen AND with the extra knowledge that all the recipes are made with FAIRTRADE chocolate, then this is the book for you!
Linda Collister is a long time supporter of fair trade and offers a wide variety of recipes, from sticky upside-down chocolate pear gingerbread and red hot chilli-pepper chocolate cake to iced chocolate tiramisu and crab risotto with white chocolate.
The cocoa beans for the Divine chocolate are grown by farmers who are members of Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana. These farmers receive an internationally agreed fair trade price for the cocoa beans, and because it is a cooperative they also co-own the company, they also share in its profits.
The first couple of chapters give a really interesting insight, including highlighting the story of Divine and a few tips about chocolate in general. Wonderful colour photographs throughout.
All royalties from the sale of this book benefit the farmers of Kuapa Kakoo and their chocolate company.

Eco Deco
Stewart and Sally Walton p/b
2007

There are quite a few books available on "craft designs" with items that can be made from recycled materials but this one is the best I have seen.
There is so much every day junk and waste we have to dispose of so why not have a go at making some useful and beautiful objects from the rubbish? Cardboard, wood, glass, ceramics, metals and fabrics can be turned into furniture, pieces of art, soft furnishings and decorations.
Each chapter explains how to harvest your materials and prepare them for reuse, together with clear instructions.
Recycling materials is not a new phenomenon but this book shows what lovely objects can be made from a few bits of waste.
Beautiful photographs throughout and it also features a gallery of examples from contemporary craftspeople working from recycled materials.

Handmade Baskets
Susie Vaughan
Republished 2006 p/b

Hooray! This book is now back in print. It is still the most inspiring and the easiest to follow publication on basket making.
It is extra special as it gives you wonderful colour photographs of materials that can be gathered in woods, hedgerows and your own garden to make into a colourful array of baskets. All entirely natural materials and often making use of prunings which would otherwise be wasted (well not really wasted as us good people would compost them but it wouldn't look half as attractive!) The full colour diagrams showing you how to weave really guides you clearly through to making a basket that would be truly original.
So from collecting materials, how to make a simple round basket or having a go at a variety of different designs and weaves, through to a wonderful gallery of baskets in all shapes and forms, all in the most beautiful natural colours imaginable - they are all here in this book.

Organic Places to Stay in the UK p/b
2nd edition
Linda Moss
2008

A great guide for places to stay which specialise in serving organic food.

B & B's. small hotels and guest houses offering organic, local
and home grown produce.
Organic certified farms, where guests can see about the organic
way of farming.
Camp sites on organic farms.
Self catering accommodation, where at some, there is the opportunity to
buy local organic produce, and others where it is possible to buy the owners
own home grown produce.

There are over 500 entries, and the majority of places listed use at least 50% organic produce, with many offering a much higher percentage. Many of them go beyond just having "organic produce" but also support a more "green lifestyle" with more of the everyday products being "environmentally friendly".
Why go abroad (especially if it involves air miles) when there are so many wonderful places to stay and see in the UK.

Men and Sheds
Gordon Thorburn
2003

Women have handbags, men have sheds! Sheds are as British as real ale, wet weather and a place for men to escape from the opposite sex.
This book is full of great photos and fascinating stories showing the diversity of what happens within sheds. The passions and personalities hidden within - some crammed with strange inventions, a collection of various bricks, yet another has a collection of milk bottles and another turning his shed into a mini cinema.
A wonderful book to read and at the same time it will hopefully put a smile on your face.

This is a humorous celebration of the diversity, industry and comedy of the modern allotment community. The author, Chris Opperman trudged pathways and furrowed fields to reveal the real allotment myth. From pioneering minds, topiary, pumpkins to allotment shops and designer plots - he found them all. Home Work
Lloyd Kahn
2004
Almost everyone who works here and has taken a look at this book and has promptly stated "they want to buy a copy". It is the sequal to the best selling book "Shelter". An unique, amazing book of homes of builders, dwellers, dreamers and doers.

There are 1100 photos which are absolutely sensational and over 300 drawings, all illustrating buildings assembled by human hands.

There is a house built of bottles in the Nevada desert, a Japanese-style stilt house accessible only by a cable 500 feet across a river, stone houses in South Africa, off the grid solar powered houses, others built of straw bale, cob, bamboo and log structures.
There are sections on "fantasy" buildings, shelters of indigenous people of Africa, Asia and South America, housetrucks, campershells, yurts, tipis and tents.

Just buy the book and you see what I mean by it being an unique, amazing book.

How to Make a Wildlife Garden
C Baines
2000 (New edition)
This book is written by the leading expert on this subject. Crammed with ideas which will make you want to start changing your garden straight away. The first chapters give the reason why wildlife gardens are so important and how easy it is in creating one. It doesn't matter what size garden you have, or where you live (town or country), a mini-wildlife sanctuary can be made.
The middle part explains about creating new habitats, including shrubberies, wildflower areas and ponds.
The last section will help you give your garden the first class hotel/service station for a diverse range of insects and animals. Information including how to keep butterflies happy, the siting of nest boxes, and how growing food in your garden together with companion planting will help all types of insects (and in return they will be helping you).
Lovely colour photographs. Definitely this is still the bible on this subject. Everyone who is remotely interested in gardening or wildlife should have a copy.

Britain's Wild Harvest
Hew D.V. Prendergast and Helen Sanderson
2004
At the start of the 21st centuary, Britain's wild plants still play a role in our economy. This book, which appears to be the only one on this subject, explains the different species which can be used, where they are gathered and how they are processed for the marketplace.
Chapters include food and drink, crafts and construction, managing the land and healthcare. The authors tour Britain to meet seaweed harvesters in Argyll, marsh samphire gatherers in Norfolk, basket makers in Gloucestershire and woodlanders who all around Britain are making charcoal, hurdles and developing ancient crafts for a modern world, to name but a few.
It also explores the size and sustainability of the trade in our native plants and fungi, and addresses the conservation issues that some of them raise.
It gives a fascinating and unusual glimpse of our countryside and of those who earn a living from our wild species. Lovely colour photographs throughout this book which is published by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Remarkable Trees of the World
Thomas Pakenham
2002
His first book on trees "Meeting with Remarkable Trees" (which we have on our web site) received international acclaim and was made into an often repeated television series.
This book has even more amazing photographs of incredible trees from around the world. In fact, if someone tried to explain the look of some of the trees in this book, and that they actually exist, you would not believe them! As someone else has stated "there is a "wow" factor on almost every page". So buy the book and see for yourself. 60 trees are photographed and the chapters are divided into Giants, Dwarfs, Methuselahs, Dreams, and Trees in Peril. Thomas Pakenham gift as a writer as well as a photographer is well demonstrated in this book.
