Eco Deco
Stewart and Sally Walton p/b
2007

There are quite a few books available on "craft designs" with items that can be made from recycled materials but this one is the best I have seen.
There is so much every day junk and waste we have to dispose of so why not have a go at making some useful and beautiful objects from the rubbish? Cardboard, wood, glass, ceramics, metals and fabrics can be turned into furniture, pieces of art, soft furnishings and decorations.
Each chapter explains how to harvest your materials and prepare them for reuse, together with clear instructions.
Recycling materials is not a new phenomenon but this book shows what lovely objects can be made from a few bits of waste.
Beautiful photographs throughout and it also features a gallery of examples from contemporary craftspeople working from recycled materials.

Handmade Baskets
Susie Vaughan
Republished 2006 p/b

Hooray! This book is now back in print. It is still the most inspiring and the easiest to follow publication on basket making.
It is extra special as it gives you wonderful colour photographs of materials that can be gathered in woods, hedgerows and your own garden to make into a colourful array of baskets. All entirely natural materials and often making use of prunings which would otherwise be wasted (well not really wasted as us good people would compost them but it wouldn't look half as attractive!) The full colour diagrams showing you how to weave really guides you clearly through to making a basket that would be truly original.
So from collecting materials, how to make a simple round basket or having a go at a variety of different designs and weaves, through to a wonderful gallery of baskets in all shapes and forms, all in the most beautiful natural colours imaginable - they are all here in this book.

Colour
Francois Delamare and Bernard Guineau
Revised 2002

Colour is all around us yet we take it for granted as a natural element that's always there. Colours are also manufactured, some with natural pigments, others with man made dyes.
This book is an incredible read if you are in the least bit interested in the fascinating history of hues and dyes. If you have ever wondered how many colours there are, where do indigo and ochre come from, what were the colours of ancient Egypt, why do we dye our food, who invented ink to what are pastels - it is all explained in this publication.

Originally it was published in French and then translated into English for the American market. i.e. 'colour' is spelt 'color' throughout, which makes it a bit irksome (sorry America!). However the book is forgiven as it is absolutely crammed full of information, together with full colour wonderful photographs throughout. The price is amazing too!

Turning Green Wood
Michael O'Donnell
2001
In this inspiring book, Michael O'Donnell demystifies one of the most admired techniques used by woodworkers past and present. Green woodworking is an exciting and rewarding craft, which reveals the natural qualities of timber through working with the wood while it is still alive.
Published by the renowned Guild of Master Craftsmen, this book guides you through the complete process of six different projects of creating bowls and goblets. It is fascinating to be shown that green "turnery" can be made so delicate that it is actually translucent and the wood can be gauged by shining a light through it as you work. This book is full of clear text and photographs and will enlighten the beginner and experienced wood-turner alike.

Onetree
Garry Olson and Peter Toaig
2001

Take one ailing 170 year old oak tree, which has to be felled, and then contact 74 leading designers and artists in Britain to make works of art from it.
Every piece of the tree was used, including the bark, leaves and twigs. The artists produced a huge range of pieces, including furniture, sculptures, jewellery, toys and even poetry had a part to play.

All the artists explain how they viewed the piece of the tree they received and how they decided upon the work of art they made from it.
The onetree process has been recorded by photographer Robert Walter, from the felling and the replanting of acorns by local school children, through to each piece made from the tree. The photographs are beautifully simplistic and leave the reader to plainly see the finished article.
A really wonderful book.
