England in Particular
Sue Clifford and Angela King
2006
This enormous book cannot be given justice in a few sentences here. The publication is Common Ground's celebration of "local distinctiveness" taking England as an example.
It is a culmination of more than twenty years' work ('work' doesn't sound the correct word - I am sure pleasure and research is better) by Sue Clifford and Angela King, and as they say "the land is our most elaborate storyboard". England is a land of extraordinary variety, rich in buildings, landscapes, people and wildlife. But a lot of its diversity is under siege from mass production and standardised shop fronts, while intensive farming has created a lot of bland empty countryside.
There are at least fifty topics covered in each letter of the alphabet, from abbeys to accents, Bakewell pudding to bricks, cheese rolling to crinkle-crankle walls, deezes and Dudley locusts, earth pigments to edible dormouse .
This is a book is for all English seasons and every English mile. It makes clear our vision of familiar sights whilst adding a thousand more - it will change the way you see the world. A Britannica.

Apple Games and Customs
Common Ground
Revised edition 2005
Common Ground is our favourite charity and amongst other great work they do, they initiated Apple Day, which falls on 21st October each year.
The British Isles is full of stores, customs, games and sayings about apples, some of which are peculiar to one village or they just change subtly from place to place. It is important to keep these traditions alive, which in turn reinforces local distinctiveness, and gives identity to a specific place when, in this day and age that is being lost. Would like to know about worsling, dookin' for apples, scrumping, wassail nights, seasonal customs then buy this lovely little book.
