The Transition Handbook
The Transition Handbook p/b
From oil dependency to local resilience
Rob Hopkins
2008
22.5 x 22.5cm
This is a must read.
We live in an oil-dependent world and we have reached dependency on this in a very short space of time. We all know it but seem to avoid thinking about what happens when it does run out - or it will become too expensive except for the chosen few.
Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Network, has written this important book. In it he shows how the inevitable challenge ahead of both peak oil and climate change can have a positive effect. The rebirth of local communities, which can grow more than enough of their own food, generate their own power, and build their own houses using local materials. Maybe all cannot be achieved immediately but starting off can unleash a local 'skilling-up' so that people can take back more control of their own lives.
The contents of main part of the book:
The Head: Why peak oil and climate change mean that small is inevitable
The Heart: Why having a positive vision is crucial
The Hands: Exploring the transition model for inspiring local resilience-building
There are now over 30 Transition Towns in the UK, (and many more starting all over the world) with more joining all the time. With little proactivity at government level, communities are taking matters into their own hands and acting locally. If your town/village/area is not into being a Transition Town, this wonderful guide offers you the information to start the process. What a great way to meet people in your community from all walks of life who can offer and share their knowledge, and at the same time start to develop a positive vision for a more self-reliant existence.

Fighting the Banana Wars
Fighting the Banana Wars p/b
And Other Fairtrade Battles
Harriet Lamb
2008
21.5 x 13.5cm
It is only 14 years ago that Fairtrade products were not available in the UK. Today it is worth over £300m and ranging from drinks, food, cotton, flowers to even footballs. At the heart of this revolution is the Fairtrade Foundation. It started off small with hope and big ideas, and now it has grown into changing how corporations deal with their suppliers and how consumers shop. The outcome of this is that it has transformed the lives of over 7million farmers, workers and their families.
Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation explains the fascinating story of how this came about. The Fairtrade Foundation is all about creating a better deal for workers and farmers in the developing world and not rob people in other countries of the means to feed or clothe themselves. From South America to India and Africa she meets the producers and explores the journey quite often through an unjust system. At the same time uncovers the shocking cost of our demand for cheaper food.
As Lamb states "there is much still to be done". This is a compelling eye-witness account from someone at the heart of the campaign.

Carbon Detox
George Marshall
2007 p/b
I am sure you are getting a little fed up with the words "carbon footprint", and as George Marshall starts off in this book 'Oh, not another b .y polar bear! I have to make a confession when I hear people talk about climate change I often find myself alternating between despair and boredom'.
In his frustration of reading so much about this topic but at the same time leaving him feeling cold about the importance of it all, he decided to write his own book.
At first I dipped into it (as I often do when doing book reviews) but then I wanted to read more, so I started at the beginning and read it through. A lot of what Marshall has written, I am sure many of you already know, but it is the way he has put the subject across that makes it so interesting. A really serious topic has been turned it into a really easy to read book in a very casual straight talking and worthwhile way.
So
: Deal with your inner sceptic
: Carbon audit your lifestyle
: Create a low carb action plan that works for you
: Quit the carbon habit once and for all
Buy this book (priced very reasonably) and read how it doesn't have to be doom and gloom to make a new way of life for you and your family.

The Sea, The Sea
Rosemarie Jarski
2007 H/B
The author of this book has loved the sea all her life, and compensates not living by the sea by adding salt to her bath and sleeping on a water bed!
The passion she feels for the sea reflects in this book which is full of beautiful black and white photographs, each being accompanied by quotes or short poems by famous writers such as William Shakespeare, Daphne du Maurier and others not quite so well known. Each quote or poem is beautifully written and there are a few funny and amusing ones as well as the thought provoking words.
Sit back, read this book, and indulge yourself in childhood memories, and relax by imaging yourself by the sea.

Diary of Reluctant Green
Richard Hallows
2007 p/b
Richard Hallow admits he was not a natural 'green' and as he says - can you save the planet and still have a life. He approached the topic and was very unconvinced he could sustain the motivation to go green. After all this book is dedicated 'to anyone who's ever washed up a yoghurt pot before realising the local authority won't recycle it anyway'.
From these sort of comments Hallows approaches the important subject in a funny, cynical way. It is much more readable than a book which has a straight and a matter of fact approach. He starts by explaining the first 30 days of his 'green living' and then follows on with the next 11 months, concluding at the end - did it do any good?
Really useful information throughout eg information on all the different types of plastic in packaging. Look on the bottom of any plastic bottle and within a triangular logo there will be a number inside, which indicates the type of plastic it is made of. This book indicates the "goodies" and "baddies" within the plastic world. The whole book is packed with information.
A great book.

How Many Light Bulbs does it take to Change the Planet?
Tony Juniper p/b 2007
Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth, has spelt out a concise but comprehensive overview of the action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He proposes in a very clear way the many changes that should happen in the areas of climate, production, economic policy, travel, food, international relations and justice, to name but a few. It is not a depressing read at all, he puts the facts on the line, as to how urgent the action is to stop the threat of what climate change is doing to our planet.
He writes 'Because environmental challenges are complex and interlinked, so are also the solutions. That is why I don't expect for a moment that my collection of ninety-five will stand as the last word. What I do hope, however, is that my proposals will stimulate debate, challenging those who disagree to come forward with alternative proposals'. He has sought to draw on his experience rather than the vast array of academic and technical publications that are around.
If only people running the Government departments, big business players would read this book.
The only personal criticism I have, is the unfortunate title. To me it is a little misleading, as it is not another book on the hundreds of ways we can personally save the planet by changing over to low energy light bulbs for instance (important as that is). It is a much wider spectrum than that, although the explanation on how personal lobbying is extremely important.
Definitely a must have book.

Tescopoly
Andrew Simms
2007 p/b
The rise of supermarkets, including Tescos, is big news. Do most people really understand how and what it does mean to our daily lives?
Andrew Simms, the person who introduced the term 'Clone Towns' looks into this subject which none of us should ignore.
Simms traces the supermarket disease back to its American roots and charts the moment when the promise of choice turned into something different. With Tesco leading the way he shows how supermarkets are draining life from our town centres, and in do so many smaller shops are closing.
BUT there is a change afoot, the consumer tide is turning and international campaigns are gaining ground. He ends with suggestions of change and the rethinking of big business. We must safeguard our communities and the environment - all over the world.
Read this book and see what you think of supermarkets afterwards.

Carbon Counter

Carbon dioxide is the main gas responsible for global warming and humans are producing 25 billion tonnes each year, which is raising the temperature of our planet to dangerous levels. This book is crammed full of information and will help you bring down your personal contribution to this problem.
The first section of the book makes you become aware of what global warming, fossil fuels and the carbon footprint are. Also chapters on carbon rationing, the energy debate and what if it is all a "hoax". The second section concentrates on your carbon footprint, from household emissions, transport emissions, consumption and workplace. The third section is all about sustainability. Also, there are other sections charting CO2 emissions for journeys, corporate carbons and some useful addresses. The last part of the book is your own personal carbon diary from 2007-2015.
This dinky pocket book shows how much information can be crammed into one book without using oodles of paper, It is good to see (hopefully obviously) that it is printed on 100% recycled paper BUT maybe it is not good to see it is printed in Italy - a few wasted miles there?

The Toxic Consumer
2006 p/b
Karen Ashton and Elizabeth Salter Green
A clear, precise and accessible guide to where the most common toxic chemicals are found in everyday products. Our indoor environment can be up to ten times more polluted than the outdoor environment, even in cities. Toxic chemicals are in so many of our products - to make things non-stick, flame retardant or stain resistant - which in turn implicate a staggering range of health issues.
With the new proposed chemical legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) set to be finalised later this year (2006), the issues of toxic chemicals has never been more current.
The Toxic Consumer is a must-read for anyone who wishes to secure a healthier life style. Although our bodies can never entirely free of toxic chemicals, it is possible to reduce exposure to them and at the same time make dramatic improvements to ourselves, our family and the environment. The book guides us through a lot of the most common toxic chemicals, and which products they are in.
It does sound as though it is a doom and gloom book but it is not. Just an explanation that toxic chemicals are an unavoidable fact of life, but there is something we can all do to improve our quality of life.

Life Swap
Jo Hampson with Georgina Perkins
2006 p/b
Although many of us in the western world have more money than ever before, are we any happier for it? The treadmill of life with so many gadgets that are supposed to help us do things quicker and easier, the headlong rush into buying more and more unnecessary items, being trapped into a stressful cycle of work, salary and mortgage commitments. We seem to have forgotton one of the most parts of being - time. Spending time with family and friends, just even sitting together at meal times with proper conversation is getting more of a rarity.
Well if you are up to it there is an achievable alternative.
The authors who both had enjoyable jobs felt that they did not want to work 80 hours per week. They gave up professions in which they could have had further promotions but thought beyond all that. This book shows you how it is possible to change your way of life and it is all spelt out in a very straightforward way.
The chapters include, why you want to change your way of life, what will you realistically swap your life to and what you want from your future, reality check of the downside of downshifting, the upside of downshifting. The last chapter includes case studies of people who have taken the step.
I do not know of another book that explains the reality of achieving a way of life that would make you a happier and relaxed person. An honest book which will help you turn your daydreams into reality.

Landscape Into Literature
A Writers' Anthology and Edited by Kay Dunbar
2005
Whatever a writer's subject, the landscape is usually mentioned somewhere. Childhood environments, the natural world, place and memory - to name but a few ways it gets a mention.
Eighteen contributors to this wonderful book include Ronald Blythe, the great and sadly missed, Roger Deakin, Clive Fairweather and Richard Mabey, to name but a few. They all try to attempt to unravel the mysterious chemistry between landscape and literature. Some take unexpected and quirky stands, others literally follow in their subject's footsteps, whilst others contact with the elements in different ways: gardening, cycling or swimming.
The common thread running through all the essays is the inescapable influence of childhood experiences. Fishing for minnows, rain falling on a tin bath and bullheads and tommy-whiskers on the Pennine fells.
This book came about after fourteen years of the Ways with Words Literature Festivals. Fay Dunbar, the organiser of these events thought it would be a good idea to get some of the past contributors to write in a compendium about landscapes, as it was so often mentioned in the writer's subject .
All I can say it was a great idea and is, personally, one of my favourite books.
