Mongolian Cloud Houses
Dan Frank Kuehn
New edition 2006 USA p/b

Even though the original book has been published for quite a few years, we have only just discovered it. As Yurt books are regularly requested, this is definitely one to consider.
American it is but, as is the usual case, this book is just as well suited for our use in the UK (there is a list of UK suppliers). Chapters on how to make yurts (low cost or otherwise!) and the materials required, which are all clearly written with accompanying diagrams.
Even if building or living in a yurt is not on your agenda, this book is also a fascinating read with loads of information and photographs (b/w) on Gers in Mongolia and yurt history.

Earthship - Volume 1
1990
Michael Reynolds

What is an Earthship? The idea is that an Earthship building is totally autonomous, and built mostly of unwanted tyres. The tyres are stacked and filled with subsoil from the building site. The south face of the building is a conservatory, which can then give the building as much solar gain as possible. There is an ever increasing tyre mountain, and the UK alone generates 40 million tyres each year, so if this can be addressed in some way so much the better.
Volume 1. How to Build Your Own. This book explains all you need to know about building the basic shell. Chapters include design, structure and materials, right through to the techniques for various finishes. Also included are some examples of existing Earthships.

All three books are excellent and the only drawback is the quality of the photographs, but the line drawings are extremely clear.
There are two Earthships in the UK. The first one built is in Scotland and is officially open for visitors. This building is made completely from reclaimed materials, old car tyres being the main part for the structure, but also included are drink cans for some of the walls. The second Earthship is in Brighton and The Low Carbon Network is the group behind this project, together with the author of these books, Mike Reynolds.

The complete yurt handbook is essential reading for anyone considering building a yurt or ger. The author, Paul King, has been a professional yurt builder for ten years, and has travelled Mongolia extensively to research this book. He has divided it into two parts, the first being concerned with the history and the culture of yurt living.
The second part gives full, clear instructions on building your own yurt.

The Woodland House
Ben Law
2005
Ben Law's first book 'The Woodland Way' is a permaculture approach to sustainable woodland management, and how he lived and practised this in his own wood. This new book is about how his dream came true to build one of the most sustainable homes in Britain right in his own wood. The house was featured in Channel 4's Grand Designs programme.
The timber frame was chestnut, sourced from his own woodland, together with local straw bales for infill and then plastered from his own clay and local lime, all other materials were also sourced as locally as possible. The whole structure was built for under £28,000, with the help of volunteers, with no crane, no waste, no skip and no electricity from the National Grid. His electricity comes from wind and sun, heat from wood and solar hot water panels, water from a spring and his greywater is purified by a reed bed system.
The evolving design of the house, together with plans and charts are all explained in this beautifully photographed book. Ben Law is an innovative woodsman who created this wonderful home as one of the most sustainable buildings in the UK.

Building a Low Impact Roundhouse
Tony Wrench
2001

Tony Wrench and his partner Jane live a sustsainable and in a "simplicity type of way". As he says they live in luxury, well below the poverty line working on things permacultural and wooden.

This book explains why and how he built his house. It has loads of photographs (colour and b/w) plus easy to understand line drawings.

The chapter headings explain the contents of the book in a very easy to follow way. These include materials, the skeleton and roof (uprights, crosspieces, bracing, rafters etc), walls (from the straw bales, windows and doors to the cat flap"!), water (plumbing, grey water and solar panel). Other chapters include the compost toilet and the interior of the roundhouse.

The details and report are essential reading for anyone wishing to pursue a very "low impact way of living". Tony quotes "don't expect any expertise from this book", but I think it does - it is full of ideas and information for this way of living.

The 50$ & Up Underground House Book
Mike Oehler
1997 edition

The author has been living "underground" since 1971 in the second underground house he has designed and built himself. This book is full of all the information you need to know about building such a house. It is written in a down to earth way (sorry pun not intended!) explaining how such buildings can be full of light and air, with views, cutting material costs up to 90%, using solar energy and so on.
The chapters, with good line drawings and explanations go through the whole process of designing and building such a home, first from basic design right through to the built in barbecue or built-in greenhouse. He explains why they can be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, how the architectural possibilities are enormous - it is fun to read and easy to understand.
