George Saves the World by Lunchtime
Jo Readman
2006 p/b

This childrens book is about a delightful cartoon character called George. One Saturday morning Grandpa asks George what he going to do today, George replies "I am going to save the world by lunchtime".
The book then takes you through the morning showing children how they too could help save the world by practising the four 'R's'- reduce, re-use, repair and recycle. Each page has a section introducing ideas on how to go about using the four 'R's' - all explained in an easy to read way that children will understand.
It is full of bright colourful cartoon illustrations, together with a mixture of photographs.
This book has been inspired by The Eden Project and is an excellent way of helping children understand that it doesn't matter what you do, any small deed to help the environment is a good thing.

The River's Voice
An Anthology of Poetry
Edited by Angela King and Sue Clifford for Common Ground
2000

More than 180 poems about streams, rivers and brooks, both large and small are all in this book of prose. Old voices from Tennyson, Wordsworth and Coleridge, to new voices of such poets as Charles Tomlinson, Ted Hughes, Ewan MacColl and Andrew Motion.
In this day and age, where rivers are battling against the onslaught of de-naturing, the lowering of water tables, and the destruction of water-loving habitats and wildlife, poets can capture the elusive qualities of running water.
Common Ground has put together such poems that can offer to route our imagination around running water in cities, villages, the countryside and towards pools and seas.

The Global Garden
Kate Petty and Jennie Maizels
2005

A great educational book for young children. Turn the wheel, lift the flaps and pop-up pages. Throughout it is crammed with information about how seeds turn into plants, how plants grow, what they need, how fruit grows and what part of vegetables are eaten. It also explains that it is not just food that comes from plants, for instance, how did this book grow. It is quite fascinating for an adult to lift this, turn that, let alone children!
The only down side is that it is the book is printed and assembled in Malaysia for Eden Project Books.

Men and Sheds
Gordon Thorburn
2003 h/b

Women have handbags, men have sheds! Sheds are as British as real ale, wet weather and a place for men to escape from the opposite sex.
This book is full of great photos and fascinating stories showing the diversity of what happens within sheds. The passions and personalities hidden within - some crammed with strange inventions, a collection of various bricks, yet another has a collection of milk bottles and another turning his shed into a mini cinema.
A wonderful book to read and at the same time it will hopefully put a smile on your face.

Landscape Into Literature
A Writers' Anthology and Edited by Kay Dunbar
2005

Whatever a writer's subject, the landscape is usually mentioned somewhere. Childhood environments, the natural world, place and memory - to name but a few ways it gets a mention.
Eighteen contributors to this wonderful book include Ronald Blythe, the great and sadly missed, Roger Deakin, Clive Fairweather and Richard Mabey, to name but a few. They all try to attempt to unravel the mysterious chemistry between landscape and literature. Some take unexpected and quirky stands, others literally follow in their subject's footsteps, whilst others contact with the elements in different ways: gardening, cycling or swimming.
The common thread running through all the essays is the inescapable influence of childhood experiences. Fishing for minnows, rain falling on a tin bath and bullheads and tommy-whiskers on the Pennine fells.
This book came about after fourteen years of the Ways with Words Literature Festivals. Fay Dunbar, the organiser of these events thought it would be a good idea to get some of the past contributors to write in a compendium about landscapes, as it was so often mentioned in the writer's subject .
All I can say it was a great idea and is, personally, one of my favourite books.

Field Days
An Anthology of Poetry
Edited by Angela King and Sue Clifford for Common Ground
1998

Fields and meadows are under increasing attack from developers and intensive agriculture. Yet when we talk about the countryside and nature, fields are one of the things we picture in our minds. They are they when we go walking, when we experience the changing seasons and when we see land being ploughed.
Over 90 poets bring us verse, both ancient and modern, and take us on a tour of all types of land. From John Betjeman, Ivor Gurney through to John Keats and Seamus Heaney.
Read this book, take in our relationship with fields - how we shape them, make them, control them and name them.
Just sit down and enjoy.

The Man Who Planted Trees
Jean Giono
1995 - paperback
This is a wonderful story of how one man travelled many miles to where the Alps extend into Provence.
Here he met an old man called Elzeard Bouffier. Elzeard was a shepherd who had lost his own son and wife, and felt he had nothing better to do than to sort out perfect acorns and plant them. Over many years he planted a hundred thousand acorns. These eventually grew into a natural forest. After many years of dried cracked land, water started to appear amongst the trees together with hares and wild boars who were after the young saplings.
Read how after several years the narrator returned to the forest and saw to his astonishment the changes that had taken place.
This is a beautifully written and thought provoking book which we would recommend.
