An Inconvenient Truth
Al Gore
2006 p/b
At first glance a book written on the climate crises by a former US Vice President maybe thought of as something strange. (He did write a book before running for President "Earth in the Balance" which did not have much impact here).
However, reading the current book it is written in a very sincere way. Partly written in his life's journey to date. Why he has made certain decisions (plus his father before him) but at the same time realising what has happened to the planet in the meanwhile. He states in the book that he has vowed to make the climate crisis the top priority of his professional life. So for many years now he has travelled to many countries talking about what is happening to the planet with an excellent slide and graphic show.
So with all this experience, knowledge and enthusiasm it was thought a good idea to put it into a book (plus video - see below). At first glance the book seems to spell out doom and gloom, but it is not. It spells out what is happening to the planet in a very clear, concise and honest way. If you want to understand why global warming is happening, how it affects different parts of the planet in very different ways (floods, hurricanes, droughts etc) this book is for you (and/or video). The photographs are exceptional but for me personally, the clear straightforward graphics are the best.
"We have everything we need to begin solving this crisis, with the possible exception of the will to act". Al Gore.

In Search of Natural Architecture
David Pearson
h/b
If you want to buy a book to give you an insight on how buildings can look, then this is the one.
David Pearson is an architect whose background is in houses with environmental and holistic designs. The wonderful photographs illustrate the connections between buildings, landscapes and our lives. It takes you well away from the domination of corporate architecture. Just a little rediscovery of ancient wisdom can make all the difference to a building.
Pearson through words and photographs takes you from traditional dwellings, which have been used for thousands of years, to modern natural architecture that can make you live in harmony within buildings plus the surrounding land. As mentioned previously, wonderful photographs but it also has the added bonus of great accompanying text.

The Heritage Trees of Britain and Northern Ireland
Jon Stokes and Donald Rodger
2004 h/b
Individual trees adorn the countryside and are as important to our heritage as great stately homes and monuments. All the trees mentioned in this book are accessible to the public yet astonishingly many are unprotected by law. Heritage trees do not enjoy the same protection as historic buildings but now The Tree Council is working on a system that will safeguard them for future generations.
Each of these trees here has a story to tell. From the original Bramley apple tree, which is still going strong in a private Nottingham garden to the legendary Bleeding Yew growing in a Welsh churchyard. All the 80 trees mentioned have a rich history, which is interestingly explained, a map location and where they are
sited. Beautifully photographed by two well known photographers - Archie Miles and Edward Parker.
A really good value for money buy.
