Growing Green
Jenny Hall and Iain Tolhurst p/b
2006

A fascinating, and crammed full of information book, which is for anyone interested in growing food in an organic way. It is mainly concentrates on growing food commercially but it is still a wonderful buy for anyone with a passion for good home grown organic food.
Stock free organic growing is a relatively new concept to most people. This system works by encouraging improved rotations, increasing the use of green manures, better tillage practice and, where appropriate, plant-based composts. In using the land this way it eliminates the use of slaughterhouse by-products and manures, which in turn can be rewarded with healthier crops, less weeds, pests and diseases.
The authors both have years of organic growing experience and organic research and put up a really good case that our land can be used in a much more self- sufficient manner. Until now there has been no comprehensive guidelines on how to follow organic standards at the different scales of vegetable production using tractors, small machinery and hand tools.
It is obviously written by two people who know what they are talking about and in a clear and comprehensive way that is invaluable to both large and small-scale growers. It also comes through as a book that has been written with compassion, the planet in mind, which in turn goes together with sustainability.
