Great Bow Yard: Anatomy of an Eco Build
Nigel Grifftihs
2007 p/b
Great Bow Yard is an unusual development of 12 homes in Somerset. The developers set out to build to the highest environmental standards, and the result is a successful and award-winning housing scheme.
This book, written by Nigel Griffiths (author of another good book - The Eco House Manual), was the perfect manager for this development. He spells out in a frank and comprehensive way, an account of the building, which is intended in turn, to share lessons with builders, developers, local authorities, planners and anyone else who is involved at any stage in the building process. Great Bow Yard has proved that an environmentally sustainable development is not only theoretically possible but also practically achievable. The homes look normal, beautiful, are well thought out and are reasonable priced.

Diary of an Eco-Builder
Will Anderson
2006 p/b
Will Anderson shared his ideas and experiences in building an eco-house through his regular weekly column in The Independent newspaper.
From finding a building plot in London - which to many estate agents approached seemed like asking the impossible. Never giving up Will found a maybe plot, but as the agent said "Land, sir? As a matter of fact a building plot has just come in. A bit tricky though-there's a bloody great tree in the way." Two years later this wonderful book was started - from 1st September 2004 to 22nd February 2006 everything was recorded. A real diary with all the day-to-day challenges.
He turns a vision of a beautiful highly-energy efficient and sustainable home into reality, highlighting all the key issues which arise when building with the environment in mind. It logs so much information from start to finish. Think of such words as 'climate-sensitive design, heat pumps, materials, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling, drainage, the costs of building green, lighting, architects, green electricity, insulation, photovoltaics, paints, energy rating' and that is only about a third of the subjects covered.
Throughout, it is honest, amusing and inspiring about the self-build process. It also provides useful contacts and references at each stage.
I think it is one of the best books ever on this subject and could go
on writing its praises, but the best thing to do is to buy a copy and
read for yourself.

AECB Yearbook
A Sustainable Building Guide
2006 p/b
This is published by the Association for Environment Conscious Building. The Association promotes the use of products and materials that are safe, healthy and sustainable. This handbook includes useful information on how to make a building more environmentally friendly, whether it is for a new build, retrofit or just for awareness sake. Building regulations are changing rapidly as the Government now accepts that human-induced climate change is a most serious threat to us all. This book is up to date with many of the changes that are happening.
Also, a good part of the book contains an A-Z of members and services they can offer, from architects, builders, rainwater specialists, solar to natural paint suppliers. A very good value for money book.

Rough Guide to Sustainability
Brian Edwards
2nd edition 2005 p/b
This book should appeal to architects, designers, built environment professionals and students - in fact anyone who is keen to understand the real facts about sustainability.
What does it mean to be sustainable? This is a complex subject. A large part of designing sustainably is to do with the addressing of global warming through such ways as energy conservation, using techniques such as life-cycle assessment, a balance between capital cost and long term asset value. But it is not only about this, designing sustainability is also about creating spaces that are healthy, economically viable and sensitive to ones needs.
This book has been written to pull all these disparate and complex strands together. It explains the environmental and governmental context underlying sustainable principles, together with the science and design solutions that architects must adopt to meet 21st century definitions of responsible architecture. Green currents are becoming more and more into the "norm" and is influencing all aspects of the building profession, from the engineering of the buildings, to design, shape and the selection of materials used.
The author, Dr Brian Edwards, who amongst other positions has been responsible as sustainability advisor to RIBA 200-2002, and has written many other books on green issues, has comprehensively expanded and updated this second edition of this excellent book.

The Good House Book
Clarke Snell
2004 (USA) paperback
I know there are loads of books on sustainable building, so why should I suggest yet another and one written mainly for the American market? Well this book covers an enormous amount, and as it is relevant to building in the Northern Hemisphere, most of the information can be adapted for this country.
The author takes an objective look at how a house is supposed to function. The advantages and disadvantages of different building approaches in both the conventional and alternative methods are aired throughout. It covers the traditional, modern and alternative building materials, the various types of structures, how to create a stable temperature, the water use in and around a building, in fact all the choices that have to be made for individual needs on all aspects of building.
It is richly illustrated in full colour throughout. The photographs are inspirational and the drawings are some of the clearest and understandable I have seen.
If you want an eco-friendly, energy-efficient and "good house" that is both warm and welcoming, and uniquely individual then this is an excellent book.

The House Book
This edition 2004 p/b
The House Book is a global survey of 500 houses, covering an astonishing array of architects. The selection ranges from mud huts, Baroque palaces, Arts and Crafts houses, excavated dwellings to today's contemporary icons. Arranged in A-Z order by architect, patron, tribe or people. Each house is photographed (one to each page) to reveal the diverse nature of buildings we call home. Also, each has an explanation of both the building and architect, and where it is placed in a historical context.
A very informative source book, or just a fascinating read for anyone wanting to learn about the different houses built in various parts of the world.

Adapting Buildings and Cities for Climate Change
A 21st Century Survival Guide
Sue Roaf, David Crichton, Fergus Nicol
2004
Climate change is going to happen and its impacts on our lives are likely to be far worse than generally expected. Sue Roaf argues that many modern buildings are not only 'unsustainable' in themselves but are also having a catastrophic effect on the global climate. In a unique argument, she illustrates that the only way we can hope to survive the following century in tact is if we not only begin to radically reduce CO2 emissions from our buildings and stop building climatically disastrous building types but also build only the buildings that can survive in the changed climates of the future.
Two main scenarios of future building development with the 'business as usual' model and the 'survival plan' model. The book makes a list of recommendations based on the two scenarios of what actions should be taken by architects, planners and engineers as well as local and national governments, businesses and ordinary people in ensuring the true sustainable nature of the built environment.

Closing The Loop
Benchmarks for sustainable buildings
Sue Roaf, with Andrew Horsley and Rajat Gupta
2004
A revolution is occurring in the building industry, as at long last people are actually asking to live and work in sustainable, comfortable and healthy buildings. The most important factor to bring about this change is the public's awareness of climate change. There is a strong link between people, buildings and climate.
: buildings use so much energy
: buildings fail to provide conditions in which we can
survive when energy supply fails
: buildings are using more and more energy (which we cannot indefinitely
keep supplying) resulting in even more greenhouse gases
The knowledge is that modern buildings appear to be actually getting less green year after year. Sue Roaf has written this book to look at and address benchmarks for a sustainable building performance that will equip designers, developers and occupants with the knowledge to monitor and evaluate their buildings. It also looks at in detail the wide range of social and environmental issues. In this book the author shows the sustainable building process is in itself a virtuous circle, a closed loop, with benefits to all - a process that goes towards a credible sustainable future, significantly improving design and production standards and therefore the quality of life.

Sustainable Housing Schemes in the UK
Edited by Nick White from the Hockerton Housing Project
2002
The Hockerton Housing Project is one of the countries most well known sustainable developments. And as a result, during the building of Hockerton they were inundated from individuals, groups and organisations asking for advice and information. As a result this publication was produced.
There are 31 case studies, providing a good spread of different types of sustainable housing from low impact settlements to large green construction developments. Some are single unit households and others are communities, also a few demonstration/eco-centres. Each case study includes really useful information about the building, the sustainability features and details of access.
There are another 50 schemes included but not with quite so much detail. Also included in the book is information on legal, financial and planning matters. Loads of further information including useful contacts and organisations.
