LANDSCAPE INTO LITERATURE
A Writers' Anthology and Edited by Kay Dunbar
2005
p/b
Whatever a writer's subject, the landscape is usually mentioned somewhere. Childhood environments, the natural world, place and memory - to name but a few ways it gets a mention.
Eighteen contributors to this wonderful book include Ronald Blythe, the great and sadly missed, Roger Deakin, Clive Fairweather and Richard Mabey, to name but a few. They all try to attempt to unravel the mysterious chemistry between landscape and literature. Some take unexpected and quirky stands, others literally follow in their subject's footsteps, whilst others contact with the elements in different ways: gardening, cycling or swimming.
The common thread running through all the essays is the inescapable influence of childhood experiences. Fishing for minnows, rain falling on a tin bath and bullheads and tommy-whiskers on the Pennine fells.
This book came about after fourteen years of the Ways with Words Literature Festivals. Fay Dunbar, the organiser of these events thought it would be a good idea to get some of the past contributors to write in a compendium about landscapes, as it was so often mentioned in the writer's subject .
All I can say it was a great idea and is, personally, one of my favourite books.
