GREEN PAINTS SHINE AGAIN ON THE NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK

August 11 2004

Sustrans 2004 "Paint a Milepost" competition for cubs & brownies has been a great success. Once again The Green Shop provided packs of Green Paints Gloss and primer to give the mileposts a bright and long lasting finish. Here's some examples of the milepost makeovers - we hope you're as impressed as we were with the excellent results and the hard work that the brownies and cubs have put into this:

5th Abbeywood Brownies - Thamesmead, London

Brownie Guider Sandy White says, "Here are three pictures of milepost 268E during that we painted during cycle week. What a fantastic time the girls had painting it. They chose what colours they wanted it painted, and each had a go at painting. Everyone had a very enjoyable weekend!!!!"

The milepost has brightened up our cycle path. Lots of people have used the path now because they wanted to soo our artwork. People have said thet they often wondered what the sign was for and how colourful it now looks.

Thank you for providing the paints and giving the girls the chance to do some thine for our community abd brighten up what was a very dull signpost.

1st Westfield Cub Scouts

Cub Scout Leader Frances Richardson told us, "we painted our milepost to reflect its position next to the sea. The fossils gave us the idea of showing it as a section through the earth. The oldest, lowest layers are the darkest browns and reds gradually changing to lighter oranges and pinks for younger rocks. The yellows are layers of sand and above them the sea with its bluey, greeny colours. The top shows a bright yellow sun rising out of the sea into a clear blue sky."

We really like your symbolic use of colour, well done - and the signpost (344E) looks great!

4th Welwyn Garden City Brownie Pack

Brownie Guider Sharon Hoy reported that, "The Brownies chose the colours to reflect their uniform. With a Brown colour for the bottom of the milepost and yellow on the top. The Blue in the centre is the background colour for some of their badges. The green triangle was to show the outdoors theme of the challenge."
