Summer Solstice
Join us to celebrate SUNday on June 23rd
All
year, every year, solar radiation travels 93 million miles from the sun
to our Earth. It is the source of nearly all the energy that sustains
life on our fragile planet - including the forces of wind and water.
SunDay is an international event held every year on the Sunday nearest
the summer solstice. It aims to raise awareness of our current dependence
on finite fossil fuels and the ways that we can now harness renewable
energy sources to power our world without pollution.
Following on the success of last year's event, the Green Shop are again
hosting this areas contribution to the International Solar Energy Society's
(ISES) celebration of solar power. This is one of many events taking place
all over the UK, co-ordinated by ISES. It will be both an informative
and a fun day supported by local organisations and suppliers to the Green
Shop. There will be displays and information on solar water heating, stand-alone
and grid connected photovoltaic systems, small to medium wind turbines,
Sunpipes, energy saving grants and ideas, plus natural paints and wood
finishes. On the fun side, there will be something for everyone, from
non-toxic face paints and Organic ice cream, to live music and delicious
food.
SunDay will give you a taste of sustainable living techniques and will
demonstrate how easy it is for you to make a difference. If you want to
know more about how to install your own solar hot water system, reduce
your household's consumption of fossil fuels with a wind turbine or a
photovoltaic system, or even how to best apply natural paints - this is
your opportunity to ask an expert.
There will also be the chance to see the latest in transport that is
kinder to our environment, with electric, LPG and dual fuel vehicles in
attendance - together with some pedal power! The Green Shop will be open,
with its huge range of books; natural paints; body care products; solar
and rainwater systems; wind turbines; solar toys, lights and fountains
- and much more.
Come along and find out how YOU can help to create a cleaner, safer place
to live. For SUNday events in other areas see the Solar
Energy Society events page.
The event opens at 10 am and runs through the day until 4.30 pm. Look
for the AA signs.
